Meet Sophia, an adorable 5 year old girl that was diagnosed with autism at 22 months old. This is Sophia’s third year participating in The Faces of Autism, you can read her previous stories HERE.
In the past year, Sophia has gotten a new baby sister and has gone on a vacation to Rapid City.
Sophia is a strong willed child. She loves her baby sister and enjoys hockey and coloring. Sophia has trouble making friends her age and has aggression towards her older brother.
One of the highlights Sophia’s parents have experienced while raising a child with autism includes learning from them. A unique struggle they noted is trying to keep a strict schedule because any change, even something little like time change, throws her whole schedule off.
Sophia would like others to know '“Even though I’m different, I still have feelings.”
The advice Sophia’s parents would like to give those that suspect their child has autism or recently got diagnosed:
”There are people that understand and care. It’s okay to reach out to others. Ask questions, go to your doctor and get them the help that they may need. Getting them the help they need makes a huge difference.”
If you are worried your child may have some delays, you can speak to their doctor, or contact Early Intervention for a screening from birth to 3 years old. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out and I will do my best to help you.
